Historic old town Goslar

UNESCO World heritage

Goslar – the thousand-year-old imperial city on the edge of the Harz Mountains – was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.
Its historic old town invites visitors on a fascinating journey through time, from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Where emperors and kings once ruled, today you’ll find a vibrant town full of charm, with picturesque alleys and squares perfect for strolling, shopping, dining, and relaxing. Narrow cobblestone lanes and magnificent medieval buildings shape the character of Goslar.
Highlights include the Imperial Palace (Kaiserpfalz), built in Romanesque style, and the many half-timbered houses along Peterstraße.

Also part of the World Heritage Site is the Rammelsberg Mine, which documents over 1,000 years of mining history.
Once home to the world’s largest connected deposit of copper, lead, and zinc ore, it now offers an unforgettable underground experience.

Der Brocken

The Brocken – highest mountain in the Harz

At 1,141.2 meters above sea level, the Brocken is the highest mountain in the Harz region and also the tallest peak in all of northern Germany.

In August 1961, the Brocken—located near the former inner-German border—was declared a military restricted area by the GDR and was no longer accessible to the public. Since 1989, however, visitors have once again been able to explore the mountain, visit the Brocken Museum, and stroll through the Brocken Garden, a botanical garden at the summit.

You can reach the top of the Brocken via well-maintained hiking and cycling trails from several directions and towns. A particularly memorable experience is the Brockenbahn, a historic narrow-gauge railway that takes passengers all the way up to the highest train station in Germany.

Upper Harz Water Management System

UNESCO World heritage

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Upper Harz Water Management System – a unique network of ponds, ditches, tunnels, and mining facilities located in the Lower Saxony part of the Harz Mountains.

Developed from the 16th century onwards, the system was used to power waterwheels for mining operations. These waterwheels drove pumps, moved ore carts, and even transported miners.

The continuous supply of water made it possible to operate what were once the deepest mines in the world, turning the Harz region into Europe’s largest silver producer during the Baroque era.

A special tip: Take the educational hiking trail from the Oderteich reservoir to the Rehberger Grabenhaus. The 6-kilometer route runs directly along the historic ditches, with information boards providing fascinating insights into the 500-year history of the Upper Harz Water Management System.
